Several reports had been made on the somatosensory evoked potentials (SEPs) in cerebrovascular diseases. However, no report has been made in relation to the changes of SEPs in the acute stage and these roles of the evaluations in the functional recoveries.
The authors investigated the interrelationships between the changes of SEPs in the acute stage and the functional recoveries in cases with putaminal hemorrhage, diagnosed by serial angiography.
The patients had been divided into three groups: group A (20 cases); each component of SEPs had been elicited with delayed peak latencies and low amplitude on the affected side, group B(9 cases); equivocal evoked potentials with the negative or positive amplitude maximally about 5 to 10μV, elicited on the affected side, and group C (31 cases); no evoked potentials except P 1 had been elicited.
The evaluations of the functions of the hands were made by Brunnstrom's methods.
The following results were obtained.
1) 18 cases (90%) of the group A, and 5 cases (55.6%) of the group B recovered to the normal or near normal functions of the stage V or VI, but only one (3.2%) of the group C.
2) In the group C, 26 cases (83.9%) had been evaluated in the useless hands under stage III, after exercise for several months.
3) These results suggested the usefulness of the studies on somatosensory evoked responses for the estimations of the functional recoveries in the acute stage of the cases with putaminal hemorrhage.
