Thyrotropin releasing factor (TRF) was injected into Wistar male rats and DD male mice for various durations in combination with various substances in order to produce experimentally, thyroid diseases clinically resembling simple goiter, hyperthyroidism, subacute thyroiditis and thyroid tumor.<BR>1. When the animals were fed a definite amount of iodine, and at the same time injected daily with TRF for 3 months, the thyroid function was lowered with an increase in thyroid weight, thus presenting a clinical picture of simple goiter.<BR>2. When animals were fed beans, and at the same time injected daily with TRF for 3 months, hyperthyroidism without thyroid weight gain was produced.<BR>3. When Freund's adjuvant, thyroglobulin and TRF were daily and concurrently administered for 1 month, histological findings of subacute thyroiditis, such as infiltration of lymphocytes and plasma cells, degeneration of follicular epithelium, destruction of follicles, and outflow of colloid from follicles, were observed.<BR>4. When TRF was injected daily for 3 months, thyroid function and thyroid weight increased nearly in parallel. In the case of daily injection for a six-months period, hyperfunction of the thyroid was stopped, and only hypertrophy and proliferation of the gland became remarkable. Namely, segregation of morphology from function was observed. Histologically there was a picture reminiscent of tumor.
