From studies conducted on the relations of pituitary adreno-cortical function to the nucleic acid content of the liver, spleen, bone-marrow and lymph node, the author has confirmed that these organs are regulated almost to an equal degree by pituitary adreno-cortical system :
1) Giving adreno-cortical hormone to excess reduced RNA and DNA, the latter to a conspicuous degree, of these organs. Adrenal extirpation, on the other hand, had little effect on these organs, causing little change in the values of their RNA and DNA.
2) Giving ACTH to excess reduced RNA but had very little effect on DNA of the organs.
Pituitary extirpation produced a slight decrease in RNA, and no decrease (or a tendency towards a slight decrease) in DNA.
3) As for the liver, study was made of effects to be produced by cortisone and ACTH on the regeneration of the liver in a chronic disorder from carbon tetrachloride. The result : while both cortisone and ACTH reduced RNA of the liver being regenerated, cortisone in particular caused a marked drop in the value of DNA suppressing the regeneration of the liver.
4) With the bone-marrow, the behavior of plasma cells was examined, and from this it was found that cortisone and ACTH reduced the amount of plasma cells while adrenal or pituitary extirpation increased it, and that the increase or decrease in the amount of plasma cells was correlated with the increase or decrease in the values of RNA and DNA.
