The authors have reported in numbers of occasions ever since 1940 when the studies on carbohydrate metabolism in vitro after Yamamoto's method have been undertaken. At present, the investigation is being made in the effort to have a contrast with in vitro on the metabolic studies by the use of Warburg's apparatus, and with liver slice and diaphragm method, and subsequent analytical or integrated report will be made. In the present papers, the experimental methods on carbohydrate metabolism in vitro is first introduced, and critically commented on a part of the results.
An attempt was made on the explanation and criteria of the method of estimating insulin in blood and the basic conditions of the experiment in vitro in using the diaphragm, and then, took up influence on various hormones, namely, insulin, pituitary, adrenocortical hormones and glucagon on the carbohydrate metabolism. The part of the results reported by the authors (Baba, Nakai) was the comparative study on the experimental data between the methods of respective hormone added to the medium and when the animals have been prior treated with the respective hormones.
The next, experiments on liver slice was dealt similarly, theories particularly on glycogenolysis and glycogenesis of the liver have been outlined. The action of hormones, i. e., insulin, pituitary, adrenocortical hormones and glucagon on the carbohydrate metabolism of the liver have been discussed. And, finally, the authors, (Baba et Nakai) have reported a finding of interest on the variation between the result of insulin or adrenaline which has been added to the medium for liver slice and the results of animals prior treated with the respective hormones.
