Masseter muscle fibers from the bellies of ten adult crab-eating monkeys (six females and four males) were studied to elucidate the characteristics of myofibrous organization in the masseteric muscle of monkeys. The muscle fibers were differentiated by Sudan Black B staining method into three types, termed white, intermediate and red fibers, with respect to fiber staining density. The following results were obtained : 1) The development of muscle weight, total number of muscle fiber and size of muscle fiber were positively correlated to development of body weight. This tendency was more marked among males than females. 2) Among the three types of fibers, the intermediate fiber was the largest in the percentage of muscle fibers in the whole section. The size of muscle fiber was greatest in the white, next the intermediate and the smallest in the red. Also, the size difference between the three types of muscle fiber was greater in males. 3) Compared with the myofibrous organization of tibialis anterior muscle and spinohumeral muscles in the same subjects, the masseter muscle was the smallest in size compared to other muscle fibers and in percentage of white muscle fiber.
