Observation was made on functional aspect of ligament structure by scanning electron microscopy of micro structure of knee joint ligament (anterior and posterior cruciate ligaments, internal and external collateral ligaments) .
Materials were human knee joint ligaments obtained from amputated legs of 23-76 year old patients.
Sites of observation were initiating part, middle part and attached part of a ligament.
Results are as follows.
1) On longitudinal section of ligament
Longitudinal section of ligament consists of bundles of collagen fibers which form ligament fibers and they are thick, presenting wavy flows.
2) On transverse section of ligament
Anterior and posterior cruciate ligaments are divided into various large and small section which have no apparent membrane as tendon bundle. Inside the division, small holes are observed which are considered to be related with nutritional supply of ligament.
On the other hand, different from other ligaments, internal collateral ligament consists of several layers without formation of divisions.
3) On initiating part and attached part of ligament
Tibia attached parts of anterior and posterior cruciated ligaments transfer ligament fibers partly to knee cartilage, but most of them connects directly with bone.
As for shift of ligament to joint cartilage layer, whether or not ligament fibers connect with bone through cartlage layer is difficult to know.
At the initiating part of femur, ligament fibers mostly connect directly with bone fibers.
At the attached part of ligament to tibia, ligament fibers reach as far as around medullary cavity.
Ligament fibers of collateral ligament followed up just like in case of cruciate ligament, reach as far as around medullary cavity inside femur, tibia and fibula.
Clinically, ligament injury has various forms of injury and from above results of observation, in many cases of trauma, middle part of ligament is mostly cut and also liable to be excessively streched.
It is considered that ligament is apt to be injured because at forms divisions without membrane which corresponds to tendon bundle in tendon or because it forms several layers of fiber layer.
It is considered because of firm connection between ligament and bone that fracture is readily produced by injury.
