The fluctuation of serum glutamate dehydrogenase (GMD) activities by hemodialysis and genesis of elevation of this enzyme in uremic patients were investigated.
An average level of serum GMD in uremia in this experiment was 4.8±5.1 (range: 0.3-43.5) IU/1. This is very much higher than that of healthy individuals (0.0-4.5IU/1) .
Serum GMD level obtained from the patients before hemodialysis was 5.5±4.4IU/1, that of during hemodialysis treatment 5.0±3.7 IU/1, and after hemodialysis 4.0±2.7 IU/1. It seemed that the level of GMD had gradually decreased in the course of hemodialysis treatment.
When comparing the levels of GMD in different types of uremia, although the results obtained from the cases of post-operative acute uremia remained within about a healthy range, the results in the cases of uremia following chronic nephritis and postrenal uremia were abnormally high levels.
In the cases of GMD level exceeding 10IU/1 before hemodialysis, serum GOT and GPT levels had been abnormally higher and serum total cholesterol level and A/G ratio were extremely low. On the contrary, GMD level exceeded 10IU/1 after hemodialysis, serum creatinine and urea levels had shown the same abnormally high levels as the GOT and GPT ones.
I think that the abnormally high level of serum GMD in uremia has been contributed not only through renal dysfunction, especially tubular cell injury, but also participation of any damage to liver cells.
