The activity of Erythropoietin (ESF) in healthy children, and patients with aplastic anemia and acute leukemia of childhood was studied, and following results were obtained.
1. The titer of ESF in healthy children was variable as age changed with special high activity during two to four months of age.
2. When the hemoglobin concentration reached down to 7 Gm/ 100 ml, the titer of ESF activity of aplastic anemia began to elevate.
3. No significant relotionship were observed between the hemoglobin concentration and the ESF activity in sera of acute leukemia, different from those seen in aplastic anemia. In majority of patients with leakemia, no elevation of ESF titer observed when hemoglobin lowered below 7 Gm/100 ml, while elevated with hemoglobin of more than 10 Gm/100 ml.
4. No significant changes of ESF activity between the pre-and post-consolidation therapy were observed in acute leukemia patients.
5. The results of ESF titer obtained from the method of bioassay were in accordance with those by hemagglutination inhibition test in about 50% with aplastic anemia, while rest of them showed no relationship.
