Since L-carnosine exerts a facilitating action on experimental formation of granulation tissue, the effect of L-carnosine on various kinds of experimental gastric ulcer was studied ; and the following conclusions were obtained :
1) A slight preventive effect was noted in the development of acute experimental gastric ulcer, but scarcely any therapeutic effects were found.
2) In cortisone-induced ulcer, combined administration of L-carnosine definitely exerted a preventive effect.
3) In clamping cortisone ulcer and acetic acid ulcer which are experimental ulcers considered to closely resemble chronic gastric ulcer in man, subcutaneous administration of 200-500 mg/kg of L-carnosine markedly facilitated healing.
4) L-carnosine administration completely inhibited the decrease of blood flow through the gastric mucosa seen in gastric hypermotility.
5) L-carnosine administration induced early formation of new blood vessels in the healing process of acetic acid ulcer.
6) L-carnosine failed to influence gastric secretion from the Heidenhein pouch.
