The study was mainly concerned with the contrasting capacity of Drip Infusion Pyelography (hereinafter referred to as D.I.P.), the relationship between the cleareness of picture and renal function, and the effects on the human body.
1. The examination of its contrasting capacity.
As the result of the study on the method of the premedication and the use on the contrast media in order to obtain a clearer picture, it was proved that rentgenological photographing with the use of the contrast media gave a clear picture, without restricting food and drink on the previous night of the photographing, and that the contrast media need not be diluted.
The examination under these conditions showed that in 88.2% of the normal functioning kidneys D.I.P. was as effective as Retrograde Pyelography and in 53.3% of the dysfunctioning kidneys it worked as well.
2. The relationship between the contrasting capacity and renal function.
The excretory quantity of uro-iodine and the clearness of the D.I.P. pictures were paralleled and observed in order to find out whether they were proportioned to each other. As the result it was shown that the contrast of the pictures could become an indication for the renal function in the slightly dysfunctioned kidneys, while it did not apply in the seriously dysfunctioned kidneys because the contrast was not proportioned to the excretory quantity of iodine in some cases.
3. Safety of D.I.P..
With a view to observing what effect a large quantity of iodine (which is used in executing D.I.P.) gives on the human body, the examination on the values of blood urea nitrogen and creatinin before and after D.I.P. revealed that the former was liable to rise but was normalized after 168 hours, and the latter had not change. In order to support the above result, an animal experiment was carried out to seen the effects of the use of a large quantity of the contrast media. The experiment showed that there was no histological findings in the liver or the adrenal gland, but in the kidneys there were a dilatation of partial glomerular capillary, a hyalinosis of renal tubule's epithelium and hyalincylinder. All the changes, however, were normalized after 168 hours. Hence, it was presumed that the changes were reversible and were temporary vital reactions.
