The present study was undertaken to determine the pattern of ovulation (spontaneous or coitus induced) in Microtus montebelli.
1) Ovulation was observed with a percentage of 73.3 (11/29 heads) in mated females as compared with 6.9% (2/29 heads) in unmated ones. From the above results and the histological observations on their ovaries, it seemed that M. montebelli was an induced ovulator.
2) On the times of developmental stage of ova, 1-cell stage was at 9 hours after estimated time of ovulation, 2-cell at 33-34 hours, 4-cell at 36-38 hours, 8-12-cell at 57-59 hours and blastocyst at 80-82 hours, respectively.
3) In the investigation of developmental stage of ova, it was observed that some females did not ovulate after coitus (4/15 heads) and had many abnormal ova (7/11 heads) . Therefore, it was suggested that the above fact was an obstacle to planned reproduction under the room condition.
