To confirm the precision of fecal analysis for food habits study of herbivorous animals, a feeding experiment was carried out using penned Sika deer (Cervus nippon) . Three kinds of natural grasses (Miscanthus sinensis, Pleioblastus chino and Zoysia japonica) were offered to a young buck and excreted feces were sampled for examination. It was revealed that fecal fragments of each grass were identifiable and their diagnostic characters were described. Residual ratios (proportion in the fece/proportion in the diet) of Miscanthus, Pleioblastus and Zoysia were 0.27, 1.36 and 1.04, respectively. This result implies that the fragility of Miscanthus is significantly greater than other grasses. Considering the advantages in sampling and in qualitative and quantitative evaluation, fecal analysis should be a promising method for food habits study of wild herbivores.
