Twenty-four patients with paranasal cysts which accompanied by orbital complications were treated in our hospital from July 1986 to August 1990. A retrospective study of all 24 included the following items: sex, age, location of cyst, past history of paranasal operation, orbital complications, interval between last operation and appearance of orbital complications, accuracy of diagnosis by X-ray. A determined study was made of 7 patients with visual disturbances (6 lost their sight completely), and the relationship between the interval from the onset of the visual disorder and the operation and the outcome was studied. The time from the onset of visual disturbance to the operation and from the onset of blindness to the operation were 2.1 days and 16.7 hours respectively, in 3 patients with a good outcome, and 5.0 days and 62.7 hours, respectively, in 3 patients with a poor outcome. Thus, it is important to operate on cysts accompanied by visual disturbances as soon as they are diagnosed.
