1. During the two-year period from January 1984 through December 1985, acute otitis media was diagnosed in 608 infants at the ho Pediatric Clinic. They were referred to the Sato Ear, Nose and Throat Clinic. Sixty per cent of them were under 2 years of age.2. Most of the infants showed eardrum changes of acute otitis media, but since they had no ear symptoms, the parents did not suspect ear disease.3. Many patients had upper respiratory infection with symptoms of rhinorrhea, cough and fever which had lasted from several days to some weeks prior to the detection of the otitis media. Eighty seven per cent of the children whose otitis media was diagnosed by the pediatrician, required paracentesis by the ENT specialist.4. Since the incidence of asymptomatic otitis media in infants is increasing, otoscopic examination is strongly recommended in the examination of infants with upper respiratory infection. To detect infantile otitis media more frequently, cooperation between pediatricians and ENT specialists is important.
