Malocclusion and maxillofacial morphology were observed on lateral skull films of 145 patients with unilateral cleft lip and palate (UCLP), bilateral cleft lip and palate (BCLP), cleft palate (CP) and congenital velopharyngeal insufficiency (VPI). Malocclusions were classified into three groups: normal, edge to edge and reversed. The hard palate length, soft palate length and nasopharyngeal distance were measured.1. Most of the UCLP group had edge to edge malocclusion or reversed occlusion, while the CP group had a roughly equal distribution of the three groups of malocclusions. Most of the VPI group had normal occlusion.2. The characteristics of the palate in the UCLP group were a normal hard palate, a short soft palate and a shallow nasopharyngeal distance. It seems that these characteristics are a cause of reversed occlusion.3. The CP group had a short hard palate, a short soft palate and a normal nasopharyngeal distance. It seems that reversed occlusion in this group was caused by the short hard palate, which in turn was caused by low growth potential of the maxillary bone.4. The VPI group had a normal hard palate, a short soft palate and a normal nasopharyngeal distance. It seems that maxillofacial growth in this group is normal.
