Age-related changes were examined in the inner ear of Wistar rats aged 4-28 months and ddn mice aged 3-12 months. Hair cell damage was observed in the right ears of these animals by the surface preparation technique with a phase contrast microscope. Serial horizontal sections of the left ears were stained with Hematoxylin-Eosin and examined by light microscopy.In rats up to 7 months of age hair cell loss was very slight. At 12 months the loss was the greatest in the apical turn and was also large in the basal end. The middle turn was least affected. In older groups, hair cell loss increased in the apical turn and in the basal end. After 12 months of age, inner hair cell loss was slight.In mice, outer hair cell loss was observed sporadically in all cochleas in the 3-month-old goup. After 6 months, the loss of outer hair cells was greatest in the apical turn and was also large in the basal end. The middle turn was least affected. Inner hair cell loss was slight in the apical turn.The population of spiral ganglion cells in the rats was reduced in the 12-month-old group and then gradually continued to reduce with age.The ganglion cell population of the mice showed a linear reduction after 9 months.The stria vascularis showed partial atrophy in the lower apical region in some of the older rats and mice.There is significant species difference in the pattern of inner ear changes due to aging among rats, mice, humans and guinea pigs. Even in the same species, it is thought that damage due to age differs among different strains.In experimental studies of the inner ear of animals, it is necessary to take into consideration the changes due to aging.
