The state of compliance with national environmental quality standards for N02 in Japanese urban areas remains at a low level. There is the possibility that the ship contribution rates to the total NOx emission and its concentration in the atmosphere are very large in urban areas near large ports. NOx emissions from ships maybe affecting habituated areas, and they should not be ignored..<BR>However, in addition to NOx regulations by IMO, regional regulations against NOx emission from ships are expected to be implemented in future. This paper considers the technologies necessary for complying with future regional regulations, such as effective NOx reduction at partial loads, achievement of both NOx & C02 reductions and total NOx emissions reductions through improve transport systems.
