Material Flow Analysis of Beverage Bottles and Cans in Municipal collection and Recovery Processes

The material flow of glass bottles, steel and aluminum cans, and PET bottles in municipalities were analyzed using extensive questionnaire surveys focusing on collection and material recovery.<BR>Among options available for collecting beverage containers from households, municipality curbside collection accumulates the largest mass. However, the recovery rate at material recovery facilities drops significantly when glass bottles are loaded onto mechanical trucks both for single-and mixed-material collections. Breakage of glass during collection proved to be the reason for the outstanding correlation between bulk density in the truck compartment and the estimated rate of unrecovered glass items. In terms of energy consumption for collection and recovery, various collection schemes were examined for the combination of material and type of truck. As an alternative to municipality-based curbside collection, a higher collection rate for materials could be obtained through a material bank system.
