This basic study examined concentration of purification plant sludge using electrophoresis. The sludge particles underwent electrophoresis and adhered to the electrode surface to form a dense layer when purification plant sludge was placed in an electric field. The concentrated sludge layer was peeled from the electrode and settled, thereby forming a supernatant. It was possible to concentrate the sludge continuously by coating the electrodes with non-woven cloth and removing concentrated sludge appropriately from the reactor. The solid concentration increased from 1 wt% to 6.3 wt% (dewatering ratio 84%) when the sludge was treated under conditions in which the residence time was 16 min and the potential gradient was 25 V/cm. Using electrophoresis, it is possible to remove water from sludge without passing through the dense sludge layer. For this reason, it is not necessary to peel off the dewatered cake and to wash the filter cloth. In addition, this electrophoresis method can be performed without addition of such chemicals as polyelectrolytes. Results of rough estimation of power consumption and the necessary facility size show that this electrophoresis method appears promising for application to practical water treatment facilities.
