We studied a new method of aromatic communication for consumers with no aromatic expertise. This method enables the communication between aromatic images with colors. Subjects were asked to smell one sample of a fragrance, and to select one color from the color palette that best described the aromatic image. Next, many colors which had been selected as the aromatic images of a single fragrance were presented, and they were asked to select one fragrance which they thought best described the colors. As a result, many subjects were able to obtain correct answers for fragrances, which they could easily get an image of, for example the citrus note. On the other hand, for floral notes and more complicated fragrances, which were difficult for the subjects to obtain a color image, significant results were obtained by limiting the paired comparison. From this study, we can conclude that this method to represent the aromatic image with colors can be a useful communication technique.
