In this study, onomatopoeia was used as rating words to evaluate the impression of a moving image. A moving image, for example TV, video, or movie, consists of still images that change in a time sequence. It is known that viewers watching a moving image are developing an impression consisting of a variety of information such as movement, editing effect, story-line, and emotions. Because of the complexity of the impression, it is not easy for us to express the impression by words. However, onomatopoeia might be helpful in such expression. Onomatopoeia refers to the use of words, which sound like the noise they refer to. The results showed that patterns of rating with onomatopoeia were varied depending on moving images. This finding suggests that rating with onomatopoeia is useful to evaluate the impression.
