Methods hitherto proposed for vitamin D determination are not applicable to separating vitamin D from the impurities contained in fish and fish products. However, a series of experiments carried out by the authors demonstrated that a combined use of clay and gradient alumina chromatography is highly efficient for the purpose.Based on the studies on the nature of Japanese acid clay to be used for chromatography, suitable conditions and methods for activation of the clay were secured.Satisfactory results were obtained in the experiments performed by the use of sample oils prepared from various parts of fish, dried fish and fish solubles.
