After the pea plant had been immersed in riboflavin-containing solution and the extract of the tissue was subjected to paper chromatography, there appeared a new bluish violet fluorescent substances (BV substance) at RF 0.45, besides the fluorescent substances ordinarily found by developing with butanol-acetic acid-water (4:1:5).This substance is mostly produced in the leaves and the amount formed seems to increase till the 5th day of cultivation. The most beneficial concentration of riboflavin is 2mg per 100ml.The physicochemical properties of this substance were examined and compared with flavoviolet isolated by Hotta et al. from the degradation products of riboflavin. The RF values in paper chromatography, migration values in electrophoresis, fluorescent tone in ultraviolet ray and absorption maxima at 234, 265 and 324mμ coincided fairly well with those of flavoviolet. It is concluded therefore that BV substance is identical with flavoviolet, i.e., 1-ribityl-2-oxo-3-hydroxy-6, 7-dimethyl-quinoxaline.
