The Long Term Result of Functional Treatment of Fracture of the Dorso-lumbar Spine

One hundred and seventy patients of fracture and fracture-dislocation of the dorso-lumbar spine were treated in our hospital during the last twelve years. This report is based on the observation of 83 cases, including 43 cases treated immediately by functional method. All cases were followed by an average of 7.3 years after injury. The effectiveness of treatment was investigated by subjective evaluations of patients and their physical examinations. 60.5 per cent of cases treated by functional method were classified as excellent or good, whereas only 37.5 per cent of cases treated by other methods gained similar results as above. 75.9 per cent of all patients were reinstated in their former position and 62.5 per cent of them were in the position of so called physical labor.
