• Over a nine-year period, 8 cases of sternal osteomyelitis complicating median sternotomy were seen in the Orthopaedic Department of Kokura Memorial Hospital. Seven cases were preceded by aortocoronary bypass operation and one by valve replacement. Four cases were diabetic. Three cases had a wider involvement of combined sternal osteomyelitis and costochondritis. Pseudomonas aeruginosa was the most frequent organism isolated and antibiotic-resistant staph. aureus was cultured in one case. Several problems about the diagnostic and therapeutic aspects of this disease are discussed.
