Analysis on Muscle Atrophy of the Upper Limbs in Cervical spondylosis

This report is to describe an analysis of muscle atrophy of the upper limbs in patients with cervical sponsylosis. There are 239 cases, including 70 cases of radiculopathy and 169 casess of myelopathy. Muscle atrophy of the upper limb was noted in 30% of the radiculopathy cases and 50-60% of the myelopathy cases. Deltoid muscle, supra-and infra-spinatus muscles were mostly affected in the radiculopathy cases, and thenar, hypothenar and interosseous mescles were the main lesions in the myelopathy cases. In the radiculopathy cases, the longer is the duration from the onset, the more are the cases with muscle atrophy, whereas in the myelopathy cases, there is no correlation between the duration of the history and the frequency of cases with atrophy.Careful evaluation on muscle atrophy is helpful not only in diagnosis of the level of the lesion at the cervical spine, but also to predict the prognosis. Cases with out muscle atrophy tend to be better in the postoperative results than those with apparent muscle atrophy. However, one should take into consideration multiple lesions of neuropathy or combined lesions of both radiculopathy and myelopathy.
