Evaluation of Psychogenic Factors in Orthopedic Diseases

Psychogenic reactions play an important part in many diseases, even in orthopedic field.This is to report on evaluation of depressive state as one of the Psychogenic factors associated with orthopedic disease, using the Yamaguchi Self-rating Depressive Scale (YSDS).The subjects are 185 patients in our clinic, consisting of 88 males and 97 females, ranging in age from 15 to 85 years old. There are 22 cases with cervical spine disorders, 33 lumbar disorder, 35 RA, 10 OA, 49 trauma and others. The results are as follows:1. 53 out of 185 patients (35.3%) are assessed to be in depressive state.2. The patients who suffer from disorders of spine and rheumatoid arthritis are likely to demonstrate depressive state in high frequency.3. Depressive state tends to improve when symptoms improve after operations.These results suggest that depressive state is correlated with severity of diseases and dysfunction of activates.And it is emphasized that an accurate evaluation of patients in both physical and psychogenic condition and good relationship between doctors and patients are essential for management of diseases in orthopedic field.
