During the period from October 1986 to April 1988, arthroscopic synovectomy for rheumatoid arthritis of the ankle was performed on 9 ankles in 6 patients.Follow-up evaluations were possible for a total of 7 ankles in 5 women with a mean age of 58.2 years (range, 43-71 years). There were 5 patients in classical RA.Postoperative follow-up study was performed by personal interviews in our clinic at the final follow-up evaluation, which averaged 15 months, with a minimum of 9 months. In the evaluation by the patients, results were excellent in 2 ankles (28.5%), good in 5 ankles (71.5%).Arthroscopic synovectomy of the ankle joint can be recommended as a useful therapy for many patients with rheumatoid arthritis of the ankle.
