An extensible plate for fixation of the transferred vascularized ulnar epiphyseal plate in puppies was reported. This plate is made up of two parts; a plate with two parallel bars, and a plate with two parallel holes where the bars slide. Its expected functions not only to fix the epiphyseal plate but to allow longitudinal growth of it were tested.To evaluate the fixation, an osteotomy of the humerus was performed in 8 puppies and fixed using this plate. Bony unions were obtained within 2 months after operation in all of them. Extensible function was tested in 4 puppies aged 3 months in the distal femur across the distal epiphyseal plate. Apparent extension of the plate was seen on radiogram after operation in all of them and the longitudinal growth of the femur was almost the same as contralateral control side.These results suggest that this plate provides stability without inhibiting normal bone growth around epiphyseal plate and is therefore suitable for the experiment.
