As a part of clarifying the pathogenesis of osteonecrosis of the femoral heads in spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHRs), we observed the blood supply to the ossific nuclei in the epiphysis of the femoral head, histologically. In 250 femoral heads from 125 growing SHRs, 3 types of the ossific unclei were seen. In nearly all the cases, the ossific nuclei appeared in the lateral part of the epiphysis, and received its blood supply from the lateral epiphyseal vessels. The ossific nuclei located in the central part of the epiphysis, which would be nourished by the teres ligament vessels, was seen in 15 femoral heads. The findings of osteonec-rosis were seen in 80 femoral heads in the former and 3 femoral heads in the latter.It indicates that osteonecrosis is caused by vascular occlusion, either in the lateral epiphyseal vessels or in the teres ligament vessels.
