Compound Muscle Action Potential by Stimulating Cauda Equina in Lumbar Canal Stenosis.

Compound muscle action potentials (CMAP) were recorded in tibialis anterior, extensor digitorum brevis and abductor hallucis by stimulating cauda equina in 9 patients with cauda equina intermittent claudication due to lumbar canal stenosis. We recorded the CMAPs before walking and immediately after onset of the intermittent claudication, and then recorded them one by one. We measured amplitude, area and latency of the CMAPs, and compared the CMAPs recorded at rest with that recorded immediately after onset of the intermittent claudication for the purpose of analyzing of the alteration of the cauda equina propergation.In 6 patients of 9, amplitude and area of the CMAPs recorded in twenty seconds after walking were recognized decreased to less than ninety percents in comparison with the CMAPs before walking, and gradually recovered. But no changes were observed in the latency.We think that the temporary conduction block of the cauda equina occurs in the intermittent claudication of the lumbar canal stenosis.
