Recently, a new system called FCR (Fuji Computed Radiography) has been developed which eliminates the drawbacks of conventional screen-film radiography. Since May 1991 we have used FCR for clinical and surgical orthopaedic practice, and compared it to conventional screen-film radiography. We found the following results: Advantages of the FCR system were 1. FCR X-ray films are more clear and sharp, particularly those taken from soft tissue. 2. The FCR X-rays are converted into digital signals and recorded on a laser disc, providing much better access to the picture and allowing the clinician to consult it anytime. The disadvantages are 1. Some subjects appear reduced in size. 2. When edge effects appear, it is difficult to judge if there is loosening or bony atrophy.
