Osteonecrosis and disturbance of ossification in the proximal femoral epiphysis are seen in spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHRs).To clarify whether or not the constitutional abnormality of growth cartilage exists in SHRs, we radiologically observed the whole skeleton during growth (4-20 weeks after birth) in comparison with that of control Wistar Kyoto rats, noting the development of epiphyseal ossification centers.Flattening and ossification disturbances were frequently seen in only the proximal femoral epiphysis of SHRs after 9 weeks of age. However, the other skeletal epiphyses in SHRs showed no abnormality indicating osteonecrosis or ossification disturbance.These findings suggest that the constitutional abnormality of growth cartilage does not exist to any extent in SHRs.
