Conservative Treatment of Perthes' Disease.

Treatment of Perthes' disease aims at preventing permanent deformity of the femoral head. If such deformity occurs, there is a risk of secondary osteoarthritis in later life, often several decades later. This paper assessed the effect of conservative treatment for Perthes' disease.We studied 17 patients who had unilateral Perthes' disease. The average age at diagnosis was 6 years 8 months (ranging from 2 years 11 months to 10 years 7 months), and the mean duration of follow-up was 4 years 7 months (range, 2 years 10 months to 7 years 1 month). All patients were assessed radiographically using our criteria for Perthes' disease.In 15 patients, the result of treatment was satisfactory. We concluded that conservative treatment for Perthes' disease is indicated in the following groups: Catterall group I or II, less than 8 years of age, prior to sclerosis, and less than two signs showing the head to be at risk.
