MRI Findings in the Diagnosis of Huge Intramuscular Lipomatous Tumors.

We studied the correlation between MRI and histological findings for different types of huge intramuscular lipomatous tumors in 7 patients. The histologic types included 3 lipomas, 2 myxoid, one mixed and one well differentiated liposarcomas.MRI findings for all lipomas demonstrated homogeneous high signal intensity both on T1 and T2 weighted images. Myxoid and mixed liposarcomas were demonstrated as inhomogeneous low signal intensity on T1 weighted images. However, the well differentiated liposarcoma showed findings similar to those of lipomas, indicating that accurate discrimination with MRI between lipomas and well differentiated liposarcomas was impossible.In conclusion biopsy would be indispensable along with MRI in the diagnosis of huge intramuscular lipomas.
