In this study, 131 patients with fractures of the distal end of the radius were treated either by closed reduction and forearm plaster (107 patients), Kirschner wire fixation (14 patients) or application of a Clyburn dynamic external fixator and Fixano external fixator (10 patients).Functional results in the fixators group were 7 excellent, 2 good and 1 fair. The external fixators were effective especially for treating comminuted Colles fractures and maintaining the reduced position, with roentgenographic loss of position during fracture union shown to be minimal.
