Buming fossil fuels results in the release of sulfur oxides (SOx) into atmosphere. As ore of technologies to reduce SOx release, the slurry of lime materials such as CaCO3 is sprayed to flue gas to produce CaSO4 [desulfrization gypsum (DSG)]. We attempted to increase crop production by application of DSG to alkaline soils in Tiajin City, China. The field trials were conducted in four locations during 1998 and 1999. In two locations, com yields were increased due to application of DSG, and the increases varied from 22 to 45% depending on the soil and the year. In other two locations where the soils have became alkaline because of long-term use of alkaline irrigation water, the fresh weights of Chinese cabbage were increased by 6% on average. At present, it seems impossible to correlate the amount of DSG applied to de soil with the magnitude of the increase in crop yield However, this study clearly shows that the application of DSG is useful in improving the growth of com and to a lesser extent that of Chinese cabbage.
