An electric measuring instrument was trially built with the idea that picker materials could be improved if the factor of an impact between a shuttle and a picker and the temperature of the shuttle tip at time of the impact could be measured.
The impact force was converted into frequency change of the signal generator in the shuttle by a capacitance displacement transducer mounted on the shuttle tip. The signal of frequency change caught was measured by a discriminator, and the DC voltage produced by it was observed on a cathode ray oscilloscope in the form of a pulse wave.
For temperature measurement, a thermister bead inserted in the tip of shuttle was used as a resistor to determine the period of blocking oscillation of an RC relaxation oscillator. The temperature increment of the tip was observed on an oscilloscope as the change of the period.
Even in 140 rpm of the loom crank-shaft, the impact force reacted for about 0.5 m sec at each strike and the maximum value of it was more than 200 kg. The temperature of the shuttle tip rose about 30°C over the room temperature. The method used in this study may be useful for examing the influence of the stucture and materials of pickers upon impact force and for surveying the brake effect of swells.
