• In roller drafting the nipping ability of the roller is very important. Usually a durometer is available for measuring the nipping ability of the roller. The relationship between the results obtained by durometer and the nipping ability of the roller is studied experimentally.<BR>The hardness given by the durometer test is not a measure for the nipping ability of the roller. For the purpose of good nipping ability, a slightly higher hardness is preferable. Since synthetic rollers have different properties from leather rollers, the practice for leather rollers can not be applied directly to synthetic ones. A material whose elastic properties are such that the nipping ability is almost constant for a certain range of loads is recommended.
