Organ transplantation has been one of the hottest topics in bioethics and medical sociology. However, we prepared for a special session on living donor liver transplantation (LDLT) at the 12th Annual Meeting of the Japanese Society of Family Sociology to seek academic collaboration with family sociology. The purpose of this paper is to describe the aims and the background of this session and the current topics of LDLT to facilitate discussion in the context of family sociology. In Japan, we have had more than 2, 000 LDLT cases since 1989. The recipients are not only biologically-related children, but also adults and spouses, thus donors are selected from various family members and relatives. That means that more complex issues must have arisen for families and relatives. In the case of cadaver donor transplantation, we had a big discussion whether to admit the donors'will to whom in the family they would like to donate. Finally, the Ministry of Health didn't give a priority to families and relatives though donors wish to donate their organs to them. However, we had never discussed whether to admit organ donation from emotionally-related donors outside the family, which is already one of the normal routes in some countries. Family sociology and medical sociology should discuss further the meaning of LDLT towards the family.
