This paper investigated the issues related to living related liver transplantation (LRLT), and explored the needs of LRLT donors, investigated the training needs of medical professionals and the future direction of research on LRLT donors.
Data on the issues impacting on LRLT donors was collected by both in-depth interview and survey, which can be divided into : (1) the influence of the donor's physiological factors, (2) the impact on thedonor's psychological status, and (3) the interaction of social factors and the economic impact on the donor's life. This research found that LRLT donors took not only themselves but also other family members into account when making treatment decisions.
There was a lack of social and psychological support for LRLT donors. This suggests the necessity to train medical professionals who understand and can give professional support regarding the psychological and social situations and problems faced by LRLT donors, taking into account their family's competence to assist them.
Little research has been conducted on the psychological and social aspects of LRLT donors and their families. Further studies are needed.
