The aim of this paper is to look at the changing relationships between elderly parents and their children in Japan, with particular reference to the maturity of pension plans and the development of social services since the end of World War ll. The New Civil Code (1947) made fundamental changes to family support systems and associated patterns of inheritance of assets. It also affected the relationships between elderly parents and their adult children.<BR>First of all, the development of pension plans has given financial independence to the elderly and the availability of social services has significantly helped to reduce family care responsibilities. Secondly, as a result of these developments in both pension and social services, the number of elderly living in the same household as their adult children has dropped to less than half in the year 2000. In addition to this it was noted that whereas, the number of daughters-in-law acting as caregivers declined, that of actual daughters increased. Finally, it was also found that caregivers are not necessarily rewarded by the inheritance of family assets.
