Recently, long distance Caregiving emerges as a social issue in Japan. Many studies focus on caregiving for elders in cases of parent-child living together. Nevertheless, little research aims at examining long distance caregiving. The possible reason for this is that the previous research tended to load the regulation norms of family behaviors in parent-child living arrangements. On the other hard, more recent research focused on factors such as gender that do not tie with parent-child living arrangements.<BR>Analyzing the cases of long distance caregiving involving the eldest son or the eldest son's wife, via interviewing the parties, this paper shows that family norms related to their living arrangements of living together or living near are relevant also in long distance caregiving. The long distance care-giver may incline to choose to live together or live near with their parents. However, this paper reveales the histories of their conflicts solving and agreements achieving while living separately from their parents by the adjustment of family norms through narrative negotiations.
