This study examines the factors of the division of child care between couples. I focus on child care with the time-based conflict between family and work. Time devoted to child care, for example, nursing sick children or attending meetings held by day care, makes it difficult to fulfill the requirements of work. I studied 677 couples with children under six years old from a 2005 survey of dual-earner couples. This study shows that husbands' long working hours are negatively related to the father's division degree of child care. Wives' long working hours are positively related to the father's degree of child care. In cases involving couples where the husband can easily take time off from work, these cases are positively related to the father's degree of child care. The couples' lower consciousness of the mother's role in nursing sick children is also positively related to the father's degree of child care, while the husband's deeper thought toward the schedule of their families is positively related to the father's degree of child care.
