A Tester for Measuring the Eveness of Lap in Widthwise Direction

Usually, the eveness of lap is estimated along its lengthwise direction. It is, important however, to notice evenness along the widthwise direction. The more even the thickness of lap along the width wise direction, the better the carding action when lap is fed to a carding machine.<BR> A tester which can measure and record the thickness variations of tap continuously along the widthwise direction has been constructed. A detecting roller, which, under constant pressure, contacts a lap laid on a plain surface, traverses horizontally along the widthwise direction of lap, and the roller movement upward and downward according to the thickness variations of lap, is modified into the change of electric capacitance and recorded through electronic equipment.<BR> The thickness curve once traced by the detecting roller differs slightly from that of virgin lap. The, curves, after several traces, however, coincide almost fully with each other.<BR> Some examples of the record by the tester are introduced and the scutcher action is discussed.
