The phase velocity of the longitudinal pulse wave along polyethylene and nylon was measured under cold-drawing at 20°C in vacuum, with the following results :
1) The phase velocity is almost constant with stretching until the so-called necking develops.
2) When necking develops, phase velocity increases from about 1 400 m/sec to about 2 200 m/sec.
3) Phase velocity increases quickly with stretching beyond necking.
