A new type of heat-setting has been tried to obtain a coil-shaped structure having a polygonal or circular cross-section and an arbitrary pitch for thermoplastic yarns, and the optimum condition for heat setting has been obtained for Nylon 6, Terylene, Tetron and Saran. The results are as follows:
(1) The degree of heat-setting, for yarns, set in a circularly coiled shape is defined by a method by which a minor difference in heat-setting can be measured quantitatively.
(2) The optimum condition for heat-setting is shown below which may differ slightly due tovariations in the manufacturing processes of samples.
Sample Heating Temp. Heating Time
°C in air (min) in paraffin (min)
Saran 130 5 1
Nylon 6 160 5 1
Terylen 170 5 1
Tetoron 170 5 1
(3) The degree of heat-setting of yarns can be explained by the phenomena of stress-relaxation.
(4) Yarns set in a coiled shape ; is applicable in improving fabric hand, cushion effect, thermal insulation, filtering effect, etc.
