The experiment described here has been made to measure quantitatively the degree of opening for each frame in the blowing process. In opening, there are two actions, breaking and loosening of tufts. As for breaking, the authors have sought to find out quantitavely its degree from the mean weight of tufts broken in each frame. As to loosening, the authors have tried to ascertain its degree from the value of the apparent specific volume of tufts. The apparent specific volume has been calculated from the weight and apparent volume of tufts collected from each frame. From the size of the apparent specific volume, we have figured out the degree of opening.
We have also measured the volume of tufts by a simple photo-method and compared the results with those of the foregoing method.
Results :
1. Generally, the degree of opening increases in the following order :
H.B.B., P.O., CO., H.F., and F.S.
2. Tufts recombine with one another in some stage of the process.
3. In H.O. E.O. and F.S. lap, the degree of opening declines in proportion to each frame set in the front.
4. The curves of the degree of opening obtained by the following two methods closely resemble each other :
(1) A method which uses a row of needle.
(2) A simple photo-method.
5. Generally, the specific volume becomes larger if measured by the photo-method.
