• The author's four-year experience of lecturing the calculus of variations in the faculty of engineering in Hiroshima university is reported rather informally to give advice to teachers who have a plan to open its lecture. After some technical matters in teaching the variational calculus are discussed, an opinion is stated about under what principles mathematics should be lectured for students learning engineering.
