In political science, there are many cases where competing hypotheses have different independent variables and are best examined by non-nested hypotheses testing. The Sociotropic-Pocketbook controversy in economic voting literature is a typical case in point. In these cases, it is very difficult to test these hypotheses statistically in a classical framework. However, we can easily test them in a Bayesian framework using the Bayes Factor. In this article, I will compare these hypotheses by making use of the algorithm used in Quinn, Martin and Whitford (1999). In addition, the economic voting model will be compared with alternative models to assess the plausibility of the model itself.
